When I first read this story, I hadn't seen any episodes from Angel, season 1. The little I knew about Doyle had been gleaned from (mostly) fawning fanfic. Roseveare writes Doyle as someone who is not holier than thou and cannot walk on water. Her Doyle lacks self-confidence. He is uncertain of his role. He makes stupid choices and he questions his motives. In short, this is one of the most credible portrayals of Doyle that I've ever seen.
The Substitute Teacher is a wittily written AU story that melds the canon events of BtVS season 3 into an intriguing journey of (self-)discovery. After all, this is Sunnydale High. Why wouldn't the substitute teacher be a demon?
